We celebrate Privacy & welcome the Artificial Intelligence Regulation
On May 25, 2024, we celebrate the 6th anniversary of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which radically and comprehensively reshaped the data protection landscape in the European Union and has inspired similar legislation in non-EU countries.
This year, the anniversary of the GDPR coincides with the imminent adoption of the Artificial Intelligence Regulation (AI Act), a pioneering legislative framework regulating the development and use of artificial intelligence in the EU. The AI Act sets strict standards for the ethical and responsible development and use of AI, with a focus on data protection and citizens’ fundamental rights.
How the AI Act complements the GDPR:
- Regulates the development and use of artificial intelligence: The AI Act sets standards for the development and use of artificial intelligence, ensuring that it is trustworthy, secure and respects citizens’ rights.
- Protects data in artificial intelligence: The AI Act sets strict standards for the collection, use and processing of data in the context of AI development and use, protecting citizens’ privacy.
- Promotes the ethical development of artificial intelligence: The AI Act encourages the development of artificial intelligence that is beneficial to society and compatible with ethical values.
These two Regulations contribute to achieving a higher level of protection of EU citizens’ rights to control their data, while ensuring that AI is developed in a way that benefits society and respects fundamental rights. The 6th anniversary of GDPR coincides with the adoption of the AI Act and all related issues are redefined through a new lens. The two legislative texts are important milestones in the EU’s effort to both strengthen data protection and develop ethical artificial intelligence.
