Establishing the 28th of January as the Data Protection Day was not a random choice, as on 28.01.1981 the Council of Europe signed the first legally binding text on the protection of personal data (Convention 108 – 28.01.1981).

Although in 1981 the threats against personal data were quite different, as technology and the internet were at a fairly early stage, the adoption of this Convention highlighted that there were already concerns about the challenges posed to the right to privacy and the protection of personal data.

Today, with the rapid development of technology and the ever-increasing frequency of data breaches, Data Protection Day is more pertinent than ever. In anticipation of the publication of the European Regulation on Artificial Intelligence, concerns are being raised about how to ensure a balance between its use and the rights to privacy and data protection.

There is no doubt that 2024 will be a challenging year.
